What were the real issues regarding the Mexican / USA war in the 1830s? Was it about freedom or greed?

Mexico had abolished slavery along with most enlightened European based cultures years previously. The USA was the last remaining bastion of slavery in the world at this time.
Some think that Texas and other territories now part of the USA (thought we all know that Texas can come and go from the union as it chooses!) broke away from Mexico when they found that their ‘right’ to keep slaves was being compromised.
So it could be argued that the Mexicans were fighting to uphold the basic human rights of freedom from slavery while the American’s primary interest was a reactionary one to uphold the right to exploit fellow human beings.
My analysis leads to this conclusion but all conflicts come from complex sources so it would be interesting to hear others views on this.
